Historical Treaties of Southeast Asia

On 13-15 November two of our project members, Hans Hägerdal and Maarten Manse, presented at the conference "Voices of Resistance in and against Dutch Empire" held at Utrecht University.

The conference hosted international speakers from across the world discussing various forms of political resistance and protest across the global Dutch empire from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. The paper presented by Hans and Maarten discussed how treaties, apart from facilitating and legitimizing empire, also provided sites to negotiate with and resist supposedly overwhelming colonial power, as they partially acknowledged and maintained indigenous political legitimacy and power institutes. It will possibly be published in an edited volume resulting from the conference.

See this blog post for a more in-depth description of the conference.
