Historical Treaties of Southeast Asia

Two of our researchers are heading to Zürich this May, invited to present at an international workshop on the entangled histories of Southeast Asia's archipelagos in the age of spice trade, colonial expansion, and diplomacy.

Two members of our research project, Hans Hägerdal  and Birgit Tremml-Werner, have been invited to present their research at the international workshop Entangled Archipelagos of Southeast Asia: Conflict – Trade – Migration – Diplomacy (16th–18th Centuries), taking place on 11–12 May 2026 at the Universität Zürich.

The workshop, convened by Myriam Schmidt and Roberto Zaugg (Universität Zürich) and Susanna Burghartz (Universität Basel), and funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, brings together leading scholars from across Europe, Indonesia, and the Netherlands to explore the interconnected histories of Southeast Asia's archipelagos during the early modern period.

Birgit Tremml-Werner will present on 12 May in a session on diplomacy and global interactions, with a paper titled Patterns of Early Modern Philippine Diplomacy. Hans Hägerdal will also present on 12 May, with a paper titled Concurrent Representations of Maluku: Studying Early Modern History through Archives, Oral Traditions, and Social Sciences.

The workshop takes place at Rämistrasse 71, 8006 Zürich, and features presentations from scholars affiliated with institutions including the Universitas Indonesia, the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen, and several leading European universities.
