The Crafoord Foundation has granted SEK 2,000,000 for Isak Kronberg's PhD project Gender, Diplomacy and Imperialism: How Gendered Practices Shaped the Diplomatic Negotiations in the Colonial World of the Malay Peninsula During the Long 19th Century, which is part of the research program Historical Treaties of Southeast Asia.
The grant provides extended funding for the project, which started in February 2024. It investigates the intersection of gender, diplomacy, and imperialism, offering new insights into how gendered norms and practices influenced diplomatic relations in the colonial context of the Malay Peninsula. By examining these dynamics, the research aims to deepen our understanding of the cultural and political mechanisms that shaped colonial rule and international relations during this period.
The research is being carried out by Isak Kronberg as part of his doctoral studies, under the supervision of Stefan Amirell and Birgit Tremml-Werner.
