Historical Treaties of Southeast Asia

NUS Press (Singapore) has announced that it will launch a new book series linked to the research program Historical Treaties of Southeast Asia.

The series will be edited by Stefan Amirell, Hans Hägerdal, Ariel Lopez and Birgit Tremml-Werner. It aims to publish groundbreaking studies in the fields of diplomatic history and the history of treaty-making and interpolity law in Asia.

Diplomatic interaction among Asian polities of varying size and importance long predated European expansion into the region. Early Asian commercial and diplomatic networks also extended far beyond the continent, reaching eastern Africa and the Middle East. However, unlike the expansion of European, American and Japanese imperial powers across Asia from around 1500, inter-Asian diplomacy and international relations, as well as the agency of Asian diplomatic actors, have received scant attention.

This new series redresses this imbalance, highlighting how Asian traditions of diplomacy and international law interacted with practices originating in Europe and beyond. It also highlights the diverse diplomatic relations between and among Asian polities, both during pre-colonial and colonial periods. In doing so, the series offers more balanced accounts that recognize the agency of Asian rulers and diplomatic actors of diverse backgrounds, while also taking into account the role of violence and the inequality of cross-cultural diplomacy and treaty-making, particularly during the colonial era.

Books published in the series will include both monographs and edited volumes, first books as well as contributions from senior scholars. For more information, see the information on the NUS Press website.
